Get a life!

Came across this transcript of William Shatner's famous "Get a life!" appearance on Saturday Night Live. Amazing to think that as many years have now elapsed since this skit first aired in 1986 as separated the skit from the debut of Star Trek ...

I wasn’t offended by the sketch at the time, but now, all these years later, it hurts a little. I think it’s because, while the sketch itself wasn’t so bad*, in the time since then so many people—not just mundanes, but other fans—have used the sketch as a reference while insulting Trekkers.

* The writers of the sketch were Trekkers, and Shatner seemed to be quasi-humble about the premise, as evidenced by his remark in the monologue that he hoped Trekkers had a sense of humour, or he’d be in a lot of trouble.

Fascinating to see Natalie Portman on Saturday Night Live last night. She did the exact opposite of the "Get a Life!" skit: geeky Star Wars fans in the audience asked arcane questions about Star Wars -- and she corrected every single one of them, 'cause they all had factual errors. It was a hoot!
