[Robert J. Sawyer]  SCIENCE FICTION WRITER

ROBERT J. SAWYER
Best Novel Hugo and Nebula Award Winner

  Aurora Trophies

[Aurora Trophy] That's my Aurora Award for Golden Fleece. The Auroras are Canada's highest honor in SF writing. It's a "people's choice" award — ballots are distributed through Canadian conventions and SF magazines, and in Canadian bookstores.

The trophy was designed by Alberta artist Franklyn Johnson. It consists of two interlocking sheets of metal rippling like auroral curtains, with maple leafs cut out of them, sitting on a wooden base.

When viewed from the top, the interlocking metal sheets can be seen to form the letters "SF." (It's tricky to make out in this shot, but the vertical stroke of the "F" starts in the lower left and runs diagonally to the upper right — see it?)

The plaque reads:

Next to the trophy is the Science Fiction Book Club edition of Golden Fleece. The cover art is by Bob Eggleton.

[Aurora Trophy] [1997 Trophy]

In 1997, an alternative trophy design was used; that's it on the right. It's a riff on the Johnson design, but with a black oval base and three rippling Lucite sheets rising up from it, representing the curtains of northern lights. The middle sheet of the three has a large maple leaf etched into it. This design was created by Toronto sculptor Edward A. Charpentier.

The plaque on the 1997 Aurora reads:
